State-owned and private companies are being granted large tracts of forest and Adivasi land, as seen in Sundargarh, Dima Hasao (Assam), and Durgapur, often bypassing local consent and raising concerns of dispossession and environmental degradation. The passage of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, and the creation of the National Critical Mineral Mission underscore the centrality of minerals for energy security, clean technologies, and economic growth. At the same time, fast-track environmental clearances and massive financial allocations reveal a prioritization of extraction over safeguards.
